Now, you have lost weight, and you can’t wait to try all those new outfits and show off your tailored body, but there’s still one thing holding you back; STRETCH MARKS.

Before we go into talking about getting rid of these stretch marks, there’s been one question on my mind.

Stretch marks are long/short streaks on the skin which first appear red, but as time progresses, these lines become white or brown based on the affected person’s color.

  • Adolescents: Teenage boys and girls get stretch marks because of the rapid growth of their tissues and skin.
  • Pregnant women: Blow air into a balloon, release the air, and observe the streaks formed on the balloon. This is the same mechanism that occurs when a pregnant woman’s belly, hips, and legs are expanding.
  • Bodybuilders: They too get stretch marks because of the rapid increase in the size of their muscles.

The epidermis (outer layer of the skin) which doesn’t stretch is supported by the dermis (inner layer of the skin) which stretches.

During rapid weight changes such as pregnancy, weight gain, etc, the dermis stretches to accommodate additional levels of fat stored under the skin.

However, when the dermis stretches faster than the skin can heal, the dermis tears and forms scars (stretch marks) which is seen on the surface of the skin.

These stretch marks could be red or purple when they are just formed and become white when they are old.

Generally, the color of the stretch marks will depend on the type of skin.

  1. Weight Gain.

GET RID OF STRETCH MARKSRapid weight gain doesn’t give enough time for the skin to stretch.

So, the skin is forced to expand, and this stretched skin presents itself as streaks.

  • Weightlifters:

Excessive pressure on the muscles caused by continuous lifting results in expansion and tears on the skin we call stretch marks.

Expansion of skin at a fast rate leads to rips and tears, especially during the 3rd trimester. These marks will be most noticeable when the child is born and the tummy starts receding to its normal position.

2. Muscle Gain.

  • Bodybuilders:

GET RID OF STRETCH MARKSThey often carry out heavy training exercises and consume high protein diets which broaden the skin leading to stretch marks.

These marks appear most especially around the arms.

3.Lack of elastin and collagen.

Collagen is a protein in the body responsible for keeping the skin together. As we age, the collagen and elasticity of the skin reduce. Expanding skin with lack of enough collagen and elasticity to keep the skin together results in the skin tearing causing stretch marks.

4. Genes.

It has been proven that inherited genes from parents can cause stretch marks.

Adolescents are more predisposed to having stretch marks if their parents had stretch marks.

Vitamins A, C, and E help to heal damaged skin and maintain its natural glow. Rapid weight changes (increase or decrease ) tears the skin and with the lack of these vitamins in the body to help heal the damaged skin leads to stretch marks. That is one of the reasons why it is advice able to consume fruits and vegetables such as mangoes, bell peppers, carrots, etc.

1. Laser treatment:

GET RID OF STRETCH MARKSWell, the name explains it… It’s removing stretch marks using a laser.

But how does it work? Heat is generated by the laser and this heat gently breaks down damaged skin and the body heals itself, producing healthy and smoother skin.

PS: It is a quite painful procedure and if you don’t have a high pain tolerance, then DO NOT GO FOR IT.

Besides, it is quite expensive and requires many sessions. If you are looking to save more, THIS IS NOT THE BEST OPTION.

2. Naturally:

We have all heard of the wonders that cocoa butter has been doing for stretch marks.GET RID OF STRETCH MARKS

However, some people use different natural methods such as apple cider vinegar, Aloe Vera gel, Vaporub, Vaseline, and even weird ones like Colgate toothpaste.

I can’t say for sure if all of them are effective, but some people swear by them. But I have tried cocoa butter and unfortunately, it didn’t work for me.

Then I used the Strialite device (a painless method to remove stretch marks) and it rapidly reduced the appearance of my stretch marks in as little as 4-5 weeks.

I have written a review on this device in another post. If you are interested in reading more about the strialite device,

3. Microneedling:

GET RID OF STRETCH MARKSWhat is Microneedling?

It is a method of skin rejuvenation where tiny needles are pierced into the skin to stimulate the skin to produce collagen and repair itself.

I have also used micro needling; although it has been successful with a lot of people that didn’t include me.

Maybe it’s because of my skin type, but I used the Sdara Skincare Derma Roller with Jojoba natural oil.

It is quite discomforting when those needles are being introduced into the skin. However, micro needling increases the chances of oils and other skin treatments to penetrate the skin.

Several types of micro-needling devices on the market today are Dr. pen, EndyMed, dermarollers, dermapen, PRP, and much more.

4. Chemical Peel:

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is applied to the affected area which peels the top layer of the skin and improves theGET RID OF STRETCH MARKS appearance of stretch marks.

It is also discomforting as you may have tingling sensations, but not quite painful.

PS: This also pretty expensive and not suitable for people who are trying to save.

The TCA peel will make your complexion on the affected area lighter than the rest of the body, so when the treatment is finished, it is advice able to go for a tan.

It is also advice able to moisturize frequently as the chemicals strip your skin from its natural oils, making it feel dry.

So, moisturizing with baby oil, cocoa butter or any other lotion will greatly help.

5. Surgery – Tummy Tucks:

GET RID OF STRETCH MARKSA tummy tuck is great especially for people who have excess skin plus stretch marks.

Of course, just like any other surgeries, it has complications such as infection and scars.

Apart from those complications, it is an awesome way to “shoot two birds with one stone” (get rid of excess skin and stretch marks).

PS: It is also very expensive and cannot be performed on other parts of the body such as the legs, back, and other areas which have stretch marks, but no excess skin.

6. Dermabrasion:

Dermabrasion is a process of improving the appearance of stretch marks by a revolving rapid abrasive tool.GET RID OF STRETCH MARKS

This tool gets rid of the upper layer of dead skin cells helping to reveal the skin’s natural glow.

Dermabrasion also increases the absorption of oils and other skin treatments for stretch marks.

Some famous microdermabrasion devices on the market are PMD, Riiviva Microderm, body magic wand, etc

PS: Not suitable for sensitive skin as it could cause inflammations, pain, and redness.

7. Creams and Oils:

GET RID OF STRETCH MARKSAs explained above, creams and oils are absorbed more if combined with other treatments such as micro-needling, lasers, and dermabrasion.

Some of these creams contain vitamin C, topical retinoids, and glycolic acids which are very beneficial for stretch mark removal.

Some examples of oils and creams are Olive oil, Bio Oil, Palmer’s cocoa butter formula, Cerave special use intensive, mama belly butter, and mommy knows best vanishing cream.

Several ways to get rid of stretch marks are:

It is very important to drink water frequently as it helps eliminate waste, toxins and keeps your skin looking supple and healthy.

A rule of thumb for me is to start and end my day with a bottle of water. Anything else like juice and smoothies can be drunk within the day.

  • Exfoliation:

In another post, I explained that I EXFOLIATE EVERY SINGLE DAY using the Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off Exfoliator.

  • Keep your weight on a healthy scale:

Like I explained above, one of the causes of stretch marks is weight gain. Extreme weight loss too causes stretch marks.

Maintaining your weight on a healthy level will prevent the appearance of stretch marks.

In order to maintain my weight at the same level, I eat only when hungry and I have a special bowl where I eat all my meals from. SEE THE BOWL TO THE LEFT.

  • Eat healthily and exercise more:

Your diet plays a vital role in acquiring stretch marks.

Your meals should include fruits and vegetables at all times and it is important to exercise frequently.

You must not go to a gym to exercise, you can do it right from your living rooms as I do.

I perform stretches and my cardio exercises using a jump rope… funny right? but very effective especially for people like me working from home.

In conclusion, stretch marks can be very embarrassing (although it shouldn’t) and should be removed by any means possible.

However, if you are interested in getting rid of stretch marks in the most effective, natural, and painless method,

What do you think about these methods to get rid of stretch marks? Have I left anything out? Are there some more methods that we don’t know about?

  1. Amazing Article. I have shared the same troubles. My stretch marks after my first pregnancy. It’s hard to look at the damaged skin of my stomach because I was used to having an awesome abdomen. Anyway, I tried out the Wrap product, IT WORKS and it really lessens the appearance of my stretch marks.

    1. I’m glad to know that you finally found a solution to your stretch marks.
I mean, that’s a relief for anyone who has experienced stretch marks.
Do you mind sharing with us the WRAP PRODUCT that cleared your stretch marks?
It could be helpful to others.

      1. Hi Pearl,
Yes, I am glad you asked about it. It’s a wrap that has gel in it and all I did was wrap it to my stretch mark area. I bought it from my cousin. She is a sales associate and she introduced it to me so I went for it. I didn’t regret my decision that day and I still don’t. It was costly ($80.00 for four wraps) but it’s worth the spend. Specific details of the products are listed in my articles, which I will post below. Please do check it out and an Amazing News is; Amazon has cheaper prices on the products. Yey!!!!

        1. Oh wow, this is the first time I’m learning about these wraps.
I guess it’ll be another great option to get rid of stretch marks.
Thanks for this valuable info Ungil.

  2. Wow! That’s really all I can say. I was getting excited at the Microneedling. I thought it was more of a RELAXING stimulant until I read the part about it hurting.

The laser surgery is the thing that really had me going because of how painful it is, expensive, and it takes several treatments. That’s so inconvenient.

I’m amazed at how uncomfortable it is to get rid of stretch marks. As I mentioned, previously, I was only aware of cocoa butter. I also agree that a great diet is also helpful.

    Thanks for the article.

    1. Hey Lane,
Microneedling is discomforting, but not painful.
It could be discomforting for me, but not for you.
However, if you’re concerned about the hurting part, you could always try the Strialite device.
Though a little expensive, it is an effective and painless device used to get rid of stretch marks.
Personally, I have tried this device and it worked for me.
Besides, unlike Microneedling, you don’t need to disinfect it every time you need to use it.
I think you should give it a try.

  3. Hello Pearl,
Thanks for such an informative article. I had no idea of all these options. I cringed at some of them too. Fortunately for me, my baby marks were not too many and I was wise to run an oil on my stomach throughout my pregnancy and it definitely helps reduce the stretch marks. It was laborious every day for the 9 months, but I have no stretch marks, thankfully.
Great job and keep at it.

    1. Hi Mich,
      Thanks for reading.
I realized that many people hung on one option to get rid of stretch marks.
Although it took a great amount of time, I was able to do my research to write about all these options.
It was a great strategy to moisturize your tummy every single day during your pregnancy.
I hope that other women can learn from this to prevent stretch marks from occurring.

  4. Never knew exactly what to do with stretch marks beside applying lotions and oils. Luckily I didn’t have any, I think genetics play a role and also, I tried my best to eat healthy while I was pregnant.
When I looked at the picture of the microneedling device: no way I would do that! I wouldn’t do laser therapy either, I know it hurts because I tried laser treatments years ago for spider veins and I said: never again! All my veins came back.
This article has some useful information in it and very well explained. If had a lot of stretch marks and nothing else worked, I would try the strialite device you recommended.

  5. This is a really handy guide for stretch marks, I had no idea the science behind it. My friend just found out she’s pregnant and is prone to stretch marks – I’m going to pass this along to her. And one of my guy friends has some crazy stretch marks on his back from when he shot up like a beanstalk during puberty lol. Might have to share this with him as well. Great info, thanks for the article.

    1. HAHAHAHA Marie, I like your sense of humor.
Thanks for being part of the journey to GET RID OF STRETCH MARKS.
I wish your friends GOODLUCK in their FIGHT TO CONQUER STRETCH MARKS.

  6. I didn’t know there were so many modern remedies. I like that you told us the pros and cons of each. I want to try the Black Sugar Scrub. Do you know of any cheap solutions to tighten the face? Thanks!

    1. True June,
I like that you’re very observant. I like to be transparent when recommending products to anyone.
That’s why I present the pros and cons leaving you to make the choice.
Regarding your question, I did extensive research and based on reviews, I can safely tell you to try the Pink Madison Firming Cream.
What amazes me about this cream is that not only is it anti-wrinkles, but it can also be used on the face and neck.
Give it a try and let us know your experience.

  7. Great article. thanks for posting. I have had stretch marks since my teenage years, and being pregnant just happen to make things a lot worse. I’m like you I tried Cocoa butter but it didn’t work for me. I’m gonna try vaseline and apple cider vinegar but if this doesn’t work I guess I’ll go for Laser. Thank you for this post!
